Ll by Marty Heim ike many of the wonderful businesses in the Southeast, Abbott's Groom and Board started as a dream. For residents Marti and Duane Abbott, their dream came true in November of 2007. The perfect location to build their dream kennel from the ground up was right out their back door. For a pet owner, selecting a kennel that offers a safe environment with the owners living on the property is golden. While preparing to break ground, they toured many facilities in North Carolina and Virginia keeping a list of what was great and worked well. Along with Marti's grooming experience since 1991, they finalized the floor plans and began construction. The Abbott's have two children who naturally love animals but are better known for their skills on the soccer field. Their daughter, Camille, who is eleven years old, almost twelve, has played soccer since she was four. She is one of the top goalies in the league. Their son, Brooks, is thirteen and has played soccer since he was five years old. No one gets past him. Both children have played in the Pleasant Garden program and the Burlington Christian Academy leagues. Abbott's Groom and Board Duane Abbott have been sponsoring the PG program for four and half years. "Three seasons before we opened, our uniform shirts read Coming Soon. People kept asking, "Are you open yet?" said Marti with a smile. The father and son team are also involved with Boy Scout Troop 368 sponsored by the Alamance Presbyterian Church and supported by the Alamance Fire Department. "The boys won First Place in the 2010 SE Fun Fest Chili Cook-off this year. The cash prize will allow them to do special Christmas projects this year," said dad Duane. When Abbott's Groom and Board opened three years ago this month, it was a true gift to our community. The facility is licensed and inspected by North Carolina Department of Agriculture. It is monitored 24/7 for fire and security, offers reasonable rates, is safe and clean with caring owners.
